Around one in seven people in hospital suffers an adverse reaction to a drug while there. Although adverse reactions to drugs are a common reason for hospital admissions, very little research had been compared out on patients once they were admitted.
In a study of more than 3,000 hospital admissions in the UK, researchers discovered that around 15 per cent of patients suffered adverse reactions to drug administered by staff. Reactions included internal bleeding, kidney problems and infection with the dangerous hospital bug C difficile. The drugs most commonly associated with the reactions were anticoagulants, analgesics and diuretics.
